Baylabs in Germany

The history of Baylab begins in Wuppertal, Germany in 1998. The goal was clear at the start of the initiative: to let the young generation participate in the best possible way, what Bayer research is all about. The programs were soon extended to wider age groups and further topics. In Wuppertal, for example, a range of chemical and molecular biology topics are on the agenda, from basic chromatography to DNA analysis.

Three further Baylabs have since begun in Germany. In Berlin, where the second Baylab opened ten years later, young researchers are working on basic natural science and chemistry topics. One year later, in 2009, the first "green" Baylab opened: since then, young researchers have been able to conduct plant research at Bayer Monheim, a research campus of the Bayer Crop Science Division. The fourth location in Germany is Leverkusen – the Baylab opened here in 2010. At Baylab Leverkusen, a wide range of topics - from plant research to innovations in medicine - is offered to the young scientists.

Wuppertal

Do red leaves contain green leaf dye? To answer this question, young researchers use chromatographic separation techniques. In other projects, they might isolate the blueprint of life - DNA - from cells.

The Baylabs success story began here in Wuppertal, Germany, in 1998. Today there are more than ten Baylabs on five out of seven continents. more

Leverkusen

In Leverkusen, young researchers can learn how enzymes accelerate chemical reactions, or why they are ideal target molecules for drugs. In addition, they discover how microbes help plants to secure nutrition for the world.

In a very short walk from Bayer Group headquarters, you’ve arrived at the newest Baylab in Germany. more

Monheim

Inside the student lab in Monheim, Germany, almost everything revolves around plants. Here, young researchers learn how rapeseed oil is obtained, and how rapeseed plants can be modified by using targeted breeding.

Since 2009, the Bayer Group's plant research is represented in its own Baylab. more

Berlin

At Baylab Berlin, professional researchers use everyday chemistry to arouse enthusiasm for natural sciences. Therefore, young guests learn the pH value of cola and how sour the drink actually is. In addition, they discover what curry actually consists of and how cold ice can be.

Berlin’s Bayer Pharma location was the second Baylab site after Wuppertal. Since 2008, young researchers have been able to gain their first laboratory experiences here. more

Bergkamen

In Berkamen, Bayer's largest production site for active pharmaceutical ingredients, the success story of the Baylabs continues. The long-standing tradition of inviting students to the production site has been extended with the Baylab to include new interesting projects. more
